Short of deleting and then creating a new account, is there anything I can do to stop or at least significently cut down the number of these each day?

Your best bet is to set your account to private. That way to "request you", or even view your profile, people must either know your last name or your e-mail address.

either set your friends requests to "require email" or turn on your away message, and turn off your online now indicator

Set your account to private.

I recently changed my account from private to public and I got a ton more requests then I did with it being private, it is quite annoying so I've set it back to private.
