What can teachers do to stop kids from making up fake myspace sites about them?

I haven't had this happen, but several people in my building have. Some students used photos of staff members and made up fake myspace sites. On the sites, they contacted students in the building and made inappropriate comments and even threats about grades and detention. I know the sites were eventually removed, but can a teacher press charges against a student who does something like that? And if so, under what circumstances?

Yikes. I have sympathy for the teachers involved!

Here's what I found at cyberbullyhelp.com:

Educators can report an 閳ユ笅mposter profile閳?that targets them on MySpace. This is also under the help center and frequently asked questions. The link for educators to report fake profiles targeting faculty members is:

I've copied the link below, as well as the link to the main site. It had some good tips for parents as well.

As far as treating the cyber bullying as a crime, IANAL, but you might check out this link at stopcyberbullying.org:

Well, you can't sue them. I don't want to be responsible for the sins of my parents (which they will stick me with anyways) and I sure as hell don't want to be responsible for the sins of my kids (which the law says otherwise).

Call the parents. Tell them what the kid did. Most will probably be sympathetic and take the Xbox or Wii.
